Lifelong Learning plays key role in bridging NI skills Gap

The Alliance for Lifelong Learning (ALL) recently brought together education providers, policymakers, employers and learners at the Open University in Belfast for a major event focused on Supporting a Culture of Lifelong Learning across Northern Ireland.

Newly appointed Alliance Chair Martin Flynn, (Chief Executive OCN NI) convened the event which highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing skills needs, widening participation and promoting inclusive learning pathways for people of all ages and backgrounds to help bridge the skills gap in Northern Ireland.

Established in January 2023, ALL is a cross‑sector initiative supported by founding partners including The Open University, Open College Network NI, AONTAS, the Forum for Adult Learning NI (FALNI), the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and CO3 – Chief Officers 3rd Sector. The Department for the Economy (DfE) has attended every meeting since inception, reflecting its commitment to the Skills Strategy and the goal of increasing participation in lifelong learning.

Martin Flynn, Chair ALL said

“Today’s event truly demonstrated the power of collaboration in shaping a strong culture of lifelong learning in Northern Ireland. The insight shared by our partners, the contributions from government colleagues and, most importantly, the voices of our learners remind us why this work matters. The Alliance was established to bring people together to improve access, remove barriers and champion learning at every stage of life, and I am encouraged by the energy and commitment shown across the room today.”

A central part of the event was an interactive Collaboration Clinic on Lifelong Learning - the session explored barriers to participation, priorities for action, and opportunities for a more coordinated approach across the sector.

The Alliance will continue to work closely with key stakeholders and the Department for the Economy to promote inclusive learning pathways, support skills development, and advance collective actions emerging from the event.
