St Mary’s High School in Newry recently worked with OCN NI to develop an L2 Applied Science and L2 Early Years qualification.

Maurice Fitzpatrick, Vice-Principal of St Mary’s High School said of the collaboration: “As a school, we are constantly reviewing our curriculum provisions to ensure a broad and balanced offering in keeping with the Entitlement Framework but also with local and national Labour Market Information."

Our aim is to have curriculum pathways that suit the needs and career aspirations of our learners, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to progress to Post 16 Study or vocational job-related training.

We have worked with OCN NI in recent years and played a leading role in the development of new Level 2 qualifications in Applied Science and Early Years Learning, Care and Development.  Working with them has enabled us to develop our curriculum, introducing new subjects that engage learners in a practical way.

The teachers involved found the process of developing new national qualifications very useful for their own continued professional development.  They gained a great insight into how new qualifications are devised and feedback from students is very positive with many stating that they enjoy the subject content and the new ways of learning.

Through our experience we have learnt so much about OCN NI and how they work in partnership with schools to develop new programmes of study, using the expertise of teachers to develop new subjects.
